SAT & ACT
Below is general information about university testing requirements. It is the student’s responsibility to determine the specific testing requirements for each university to which they plan to apply.
PSAT: The PSAT is given every October. The PSAT is good practice for the SAT as it familiarizes students with the content of the SAT. PSAT scores are not used by colleges in the admissions process. All 11th grade students should take this test, and it is highly recommended for 10th grade.
SAT: We recommend that students take the SAT Reasoning Test (formerly known as “SAT I”) in the second semester of 11th grade at the earliest. Most four year colleges require this test (or the ACT, see below), including UC and Cal State.
CLASS OF 2012 AND LATER: Beginning with the Class of ’12, SAT Subject Tests will no longer be required for UC applicants; they will be optional. However, they may be required by other colleges. Take Subject Tests in May or June if currently enrolled in US History, Biology, Chemistry, Physics, and/or Math Analysis. Foreign language tests are recommended for native speakers or students who have completed at least 3 years of instruction. Take these tests in spring; do not wait until the following fall; you will have forgotten a lot of the material. Each Subject Test is one hour long and up to three can be taken on a single test date. Cal States do not require Subject Tests. We recommend that students take Subject Tests in courses they are doing well in. You cannot take the SAT Reasoning Test and SAT Subject Tests on the same date.
ACT: Many students also take the ACT, and all colleges accept the ACT in place of the SAT. The ACT should be taken in the second semester of 11th grade at the earliest. The ACT also has an optional writing component, which you must complete if you plan to apply to the UC. Register at www.actstudent.org
ACCOMMODATIONS: Both the SAT and ACT offer the opportunity for students to receive accommodations such as extended time, extra breaks, large-type test booklets, etc. If a student receives “school-based” accommodations, they will be able to test at Village Glen High School instead of a designated test center. To apply for accommodations for these exams, please contact Ms. Sadowski in the College & Career Counseling Office at least two months in advance as the process can take up to 8 weeks from when the accommodation request is submitted to when the College Board or ACT has rendered their decision.
