Math
The elementary math program is centered around the enVisionMath curriculum. This hands-on, research based program takes students through a developmental concept approach. The skills developed in this program directly correlate to the California State Standards. These sequential lessons allow students to build on previously mastered concepts and further increase their understanding of how math is a part of their daily life. Our expert staff also present differentiated instruction in order to meet our students’ diverse needs. Students are aided in developing their mathematical vocabulary and use of representation to facilitate making abstract concepts concrete. Our goal is for students to enjoy manipulating numbers and to make a personal, life long connection to math. We are setting the foundation for our students to be successful problem solvers.

For students who require additional practice with concepts, time is provided for remediation. Students work directly with staff, or in small groups, to maximize their opportunities for success.

Kindergarten
In Kindergarten our students learn to count, compare, describe, and sort objects. They also develop an understanding of small numbers and quantities, and explore basic time and geometry.

1st Grade
In 1st grade our students learn the place value system and learn applications of ones and tens. They begin measurement, addition and subtraction of small numbers, and begin statistics and data analysis by sorting and comparing objects, numbers, shapes, and colors.

2nd Grade
In 2nd grade, students continue growth in place value and addition and subtraction. Simple concepts of multiplication are introduced. More advanced concepts are explored in geometry, measurement, and comparisons. Collection and analysis of statistical data is studied, as well as verification of answers.

3rd Grade
In 3rd grade, students gain greater skills in addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division of whole numbers. They study patterns of numbers in order to solve problems. They further their abilities to measure, describe, and compare objects in space. They conduct simple probability experiments.

4th Grade
In 4th grade, students learn to add, subtract, multiply, and divide large whole numbers. They describe and compare simple fractions and decimals. They understand and can compare plane geometric figures. They further their abilities to collect and analyze data.

5th Grade
In 5th grade, students apply addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division to fractions and decimals. They learn to add and subtract positive and negative numbers. They begin to use formulas to solve problems involving geometric figures. They gain the skill of measuring and comparing angles. Students also learn to chart statistical data.

6th Grade
In 6th grade, students master the ability to compute and solve problems with whole numbers, positive fractions, positive decimals, and positive and negative integers. They learn the concepts of mean, median, and mode. They analyze data for biases and misleading conclusions. Students work with ratio and proportions and compute percentages. They expand geometric knowledge by learning the use of π and formulas for area and circumference of a circle. They also solve one step linear equations.
