Math

In middle school, students continue to develop their basic math and algebraic skills in accordance with state standards while being introduced to more difficult concepts. Students begin to evaluate and translate verbal phrases and sentences into variable expressions. They are then able to perform operations with rational numbers and use proportional reasoning to solve real-world problems. Students also develop the ability to graph linear equations and inequalities as well as add, subtract, multiply, and divide polynomials. Using relevant real life examples, these concepts are critical in helping math come alive.
Our program offers grade level instruction; however, when needed, students receive remediation of deficit skills to bring them up to grade level standards. Each and every student is thus given the tools necessary to be successful for their transition into high school.

7th Grade
In 7th Grade, students understand and use factoring of numerators and denominators and properties of exponents. They know the Pythagorean theorem and solve problems in which they compute the length of an unknown side. Students learn to compute the surface area and volume of basic three-dimensional objects and understand how area and volume change with a change in scale. Students make conversions between different units of measurement. They know and use different representations of fractional numbers (fractions, decimals, and percents) and change from one to another. They increase their facility with ratio and proportion, compute percents of increase and decrease, and compute simple and compound interest. They graph linear functions and understand the idea of slope and its relation to ratio.

 8th Grade
In 8th Grade, students solidify Pre-Algebraic background in working with number sentences and applications. Students understand negative whole-number exponents, and multiply and divide expressions involving exponents with a common base. They use variables and appropriate operations to write an expression, an equation, an inequality, or a system of equations or inequalities that represents a verbal description. They learn to graph functions of the form y = nx2 and y = nx3 and use them in solving problems. Students compare weights, capacities, geometric measures, times, and temperatures within and between measurement systems. They analyze problems by identifying relationships, distinguishing relevant from irrelevant information, identifying missing information, sequencing and prioritizing information, and observing patterns.
